The Global Investors for Sustainable Development (GISD) Alliance, supported by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, together with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the United Nations Foundation, cordially invite you to a side event organized during the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund 2023 Meetings. The event titled "Enhancing the Role of MDBs in Catalyzing Private Finance and Investment" will take place on Friday, April 14, between 8:30 - 10:00 am at the UN Foundation office (1750 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, 12th Floor Washington, DC 20006). Light breakfast will be available starting at 8:00 am.Â
Given the crucial role that multilateral development banks (MDBs) play in supporting developing countries, especially in financing the infrastructure and projects necessary to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, the event will provide an opportunity to discuss a set of specific recommendations developed by the GISD Alliance to enhance the mobilization of private capital by MDBs and Development Finance Institutions (DFIs). In this regard, it will focus on concrete actions that can be taken by MDBs towards strengthened private capital mobilization in an open exchange with private investors.
In addition, the GISD Alliance worked with the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) and the Investor Leadership Network (ILN) on a set of recommendations for MDBs and DFIs that can be implemented in the short term to scale private capital mobilization:
  1. Set and report on clear, quantifiable and more ambitious targets for private capital mobilization.
  2. Make more efficient use of their balance sheets by shifting to co-investing with the private sector and scaling risk mitigation instruments
  3. Deploy greater resource to creating pipelines of bankable projects and project preparation.
  4. Develop and expand coordination mechanisms and country-level platforms.
  5. Scale the use and availability of guarantees and seek harmonisation of terms.
  6. Improve data availability by making the GEMs database publicly available.
  7. Make more efficient use of MDB capital to enhance total capital mobilization.
The event will provide a platform to discuss the implementation of these recommendations and concrete action taken by MDBs in an open exchange with private investors.
